Quick weekend doodle of Astyr and Sydney. There’s nothing these two like better than tormenting one another.

Behind the Hiatus: Artistic Experimentation
Even though Sombulus is a long-form webcomic, I went into it believing that not only would my artistic techniques change naturally, but that change was something I wanted to pursue actively. So art style is one of the things I focus on and occasionally switch around when I take breaks between chapters, when I make extra art for vote incentives, or when the story moves to a new location that’s being magically affected in some way.

Five weeks left until Sombulus resumes in 2013!

Picked up a big Sombulus group shot piece I was working on, finished the lineart, and started coloring. I think the ducks are Sydney’s patronus.

My scanner is so terrible they didn’t make Windows 7 drivers for it, but I was working on the hubby’s laptop and was able to scan this. My first sketch in the book I got for my birthday in April. Love taking a break with colored pencil again after so much digital work! This is Mizha from LeyLines (http://leylinescomic.com), which is an excellent magic/fantasy webcomic by Robin Dempsey.

Since the upcoming pages are going to involve a lot more scenes where flying people live and we’re going to see stuff from all sorts of perspectives, it was important to me to wrangle my terrible perspective and building drawing skills. So for today’s Sombulus, I learned to use the 3D modelling program my husband always uses, Blender!

They’re certainly not super-complicated, but I’m pretty proud of how effective these simple shapes were in helping me keep things lined up. Looking forward to trying it on some interior shots next week!

If you’ve been following the Sombulus dance series (and especially if your name is Frog), you will be excited to know that there’s a new Sydney + Rana dance pic up on TWC. Thank you very much for continuing to vote, by the way! You guys are awesomesauce! <3

This week’s pages, if you need to catch up:

Been putting this series up for voting and around a couple other places the last few weeks. I’m taking a break to catch up on NaNoMangO this week, but I’m taking suggestions for next week! Thoughts?

My site is finally back! Celebrate by catching up with Tuesday’s and Thursday’s pages at sombulus.com and/or dancing a swing dance.
